People living with a disability might require assistance from someone else to complete daily tasks. This is ok! Human beings are social creatures, and we are meant to live harmoniously. But just because someone might require help, it doesn’t mean that they should settle for less than the best.
Effective support work should be built on mutual interests, a genuine care for each other, and matching personality traits. Sending a worker with a great sense of humour to a client who enjoys watching comedy movies, is a good fit. Sending a worker with gardening experience to a client who wants to create their own veggie garden, is a good fit. Sending a worker who has excellent organisational skills to a client who needs to sort out their linen closet or file their paperwork, is a good fit.
People who live with a disability should be comforted by the knowledge that there ARE support workers out there with similar interests to themselves, and that this type of relationship can create endless possibilities for everyone involved.
When care plans are being finalised, be sure to include all likes, dislikes, hobbies, and skills, as this information is just as important as the care requirements.
